One of the most common reasons for needing to repair garage doors is a misaligned track. Check the mounting brackets for loose screws. You may need to tighten them periodically. Look for scratches, dents or other problems with the door that might be the result of weather or coming in contact with an object. You can probably pound these out with a rubber mallet, or a regular hammer blocked with a piece of wood. If tracks are too damaged for realignment, they may need to be outright replaced.
To check track alignment, use a level. Horizontal tracks should have a slight incline toward the back of the garage. Roll up doors should have vertical tracks that have plumb precision. The tracks should also be aligned with one another. If the tracks are misaligned, loosen the bolts that hold in the brackets, and tap them back into precision with a rubber mallet.
It’s also a good idea to keep the tracks clean using a cleaning solvent or WD40. Use a rag, but avoid water to prevent rust.
